Roo Green - Breakfast presenter at Heart Wiltshire

Roo Green

Roo Green is one half of the Heart Wiltshire Breakfast with Jez and Roo which broadcasts every weekday morning between 6 and 10am. Roo has been working in radio since graduating from university and has worked for commercial stations across the UK, as well as doing a stint at the BBC. She has been a Broadcast Journalist, Sports Editor, Producer and Presenter on radio and has also written columns and features for various local papers. In her spare time, Roo loves writing, reading, a good costume drama and currently has a mini-obsession with Dickinson’s Real Deal. She also supports Southampton FC (”someone has to”) and this year is celebrating 21 years of ‘loving Prince.’

How did you become a presenter?

I graduated from university in London and decided starting out on working life in the capital was too expensive and too competitive. As far as I could see my only strength was knowing my local patch, so I moved back to Herefordshire where I grew up. I applied for work experience at radio stations and newspapers, and eventually got a placement on a local free paper. I worked extremely hard and got some stories published in my first couple of weeks and it soon paid off. When the local radio station (Radio Wyvern) rang up asking if they knew anyone to run their Hereford studio, they put a good word in for me. I started off simply doing ‘What’s On Guides’, but volunteered for everything and worked on lots of shows for free. I was eventually rewarded with a role in the newsroom, but even though I ended up being a Broadcast Journalist for five years, (at various stations) I always presented as well. My first regular show was co-presenting on a Sunday afternoon - I did it unpaid but couldn’t believe my luck as I’d only been working in radio for about a year.

After years in newsrooms, I heard about a role at SouthCity FM in Southampton that was just launching - which meant I could finally become a full-time presenter! I did the Drivetime show but I was also the Sports Editor, which meant I also stalked…sorry interviewed the manager and players of my beloved Southampton FC for my weekly sports show. Bliss.

I knew from very early on in my career that I really wanted to be a Breakfast presenter and finally in April 2000 - my dream came true as I got the job as a Morning Crew co-host on 96.9 Chiltern FM. I then moved to Mercia FM in Coventry after 2 years, and after 4 years there ended up here at Heart Wiltshire in 2006. I’ve now been getting up early for 9 years, and dear lord, it shows!
