Danielle Porter – A week in radio….

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

From the ears of The Pips, what’s happened in the world of radio this week!

By Danielle Porter

UK RIOTS

This week on radio it was all hands on deck for radio news teams across the UK, reporting on the riots which reeked havock across the country.

Deadicated reporters put them selves in possible danger to keep us, the listener informed.  Two Jounalists from BBC Radio Manchester were out in Salford  reporting from the radio car when they were bombarded by missiles, they ran for cover, only later to discover the radio car had been burnt out as well as a reporters wheels.  They returned back to base safe and sound but not surprisingly shaken. Similar stories have come to light since of crew being chased and equipment being smashed.  Pesonally like many, I found the whole situation rather unsettling, and when the disturbances reached Manchester after being hooked up to the TV and radio for the last couple of days and nights, I was just deeply sadened. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/england/manchester/

What are the roots of this turmoil and will we ever find out? I heard a great peice on 5 live on Wednesday (10th)  morning from about 10am, they were interviewing some youths about the situation in Tottenham trying to give an insight into their lifes. http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/

Hopefully this week across the UK it will be a lot brighter.

Listen in to the Round House to hear young people’s opinions of the riots.

Community Radio

On the 29th of August Sine FM 102 are trying to beat a world record attempt for the longest ever radio broadcast.  Theyare planning to present a 72 hour radio show to raise money for DRASACS and The Higher Rhythm Foundation.

The Pips News

This week you will be able to hear an interview with Gemma Parkinson, Central Brand Manager for Capital FM, working for Global Radio.

A big welcome to Adele and Russel Broadway new members to The Pips.

And Finally..

RIP Robert Robinson, the brodcaster and writer who died aged 83 after a long term of illness. He had a varied career on TV and presented on Radio 4 from 1971 to  1992.  Robert and John Timpson were the first to make the morning news programme Today a double act and from 1974 he presented Stop the Week, a fiercely competitive talk programme.
